The Telluride Photo Festival is only a few weeks away!

It's been awhile since we have posted an update inregards to the festival. I have to apologize as I have been working on a larger project that I hope to announceat this year's festival. The festival is just a few weeks away and if you are thinking about attending now is the time to purchase a workshop or pass. Also if you think that visiting Telluride is expensive, we have special room rates. See our lodging sponsor offers below.

The 2011 festival will feature a DSLR "Film Festival" on Friday September 29, 2011. The advent of the digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera with the ability to shoot video has revolutionized independent and low budget filmmakers--particularly in the areas of documentary, nature, adventure, and action sport film. Since many professional still photographers are now shooting video, the Telluride Photo Festival, is pleased in being able to showcase the work of leading DSLR filmmakers.

This year's list of guest workshop leaders and presenters is extremely exciting. Photographers leading workshops at this year's festival include in no particular order iLCP Fellow Garth Lenz, Adam Barker, Ansel Adams Conservation Photography Aware recipient Ian Shive, The North Photographer, Tim Kemple and the Camp4 Collective, David Clifford, Tom Till, David FitzSimmons.

Seminars are being held on October 1 and October 2 from 9am to 4pm. Here is a list of the seminars and presentors. Curious Critters: Animal Portrait Session - David FitzSimmons; When the Going Gets Tough: The Tough Get Wiser About Their Marketing & Self-Promotion Efforts - Angela Mateus; Taking Stock - A Panel Discussion on the Business of Stock Photography - Stock Photography Industry Panel; Environmental Action Shots - Adam Barker; Getting Your Photo Book - Ian Shive; Shooting HDSLR Video – Essential Primer - Tim Kemple; HDRSoft Photomatix: High Dynamic Range Photography - Ron Pepper. All seminars are included in your festival pass.

Additionally, we have a great slate of portfolio reviewers. Adam Barker - Photogrpher; David Clifford - Photographer & Photo Editor, Rock & Ice Magazine; Amy Feitelberg - Photo Editor, Outside Magazine; Rob Haggart - A Photo Editor Blog and Former Directory of Photography, Outside Magazine & Men's Journal; Jon-Paul Harrison - Managing Partner, Tandem Stills + Motion; Tim Kemple - Photographer and Filmmaker, Camp4 Collective; Sarah LaVigne - Photo Editor, 5280 Magazine; Garth Lenz - iLCP Fellow Photographer; Mark Lesh - Art Director, Skiing Magazine; Emily Loose - Director of Communications, WILD Foundation; Angela Mateaus - Managing Partner, Artists Creative Agency; Peter McBride - Photographer & Filmmaker; Boyd Norton - iLCP Fellow Photographer; Laura Pressley - Executive Director, CENTER; Ian Shive - Photographer, Filmmaker, and Managing Partner, Julia Vandenoever - Photo Editor, Backpacker Magazine, and more to be announced.

The festival features evening presentations by iLCP Fellow Boyd Norton and iLCP Fellow Garth Lenz, as well as others to be announced. There are also social networking opportunities, a gallery walk, exhibits, and other events around town--not to mention the spectacular autumn foliage in the San Juan Mountains.

Latest Photo Festival News

We have added our final workshop to this year's festival. Tim Kemple and Camp4 Collective will be leading a three day DSLR and digital video workshop. This workshop is divided into three segments: Beginning Video Shooting, Advanced Video Shooting and Video Post Production. Each segment can be purchased individually. Tim and Camp4 shot and produced The North Face sponsored and award winning Towers of Ennedi--which will be featured at our DSLR Film Festival. Tim will also be giving a presentation at the festival. We are hoping that Renan Ozturk, one of Camp4's principles, will also be able to make the festival.

Tim Kemple & Camp4 Collective - DSLR Adventure Video
Tim Kemple along with Camp4 Collective are on the cutting edge of adventure video production--particularly in the use of DSLR video. Tim and Camp4 will show you how to shoot and edit digital video. The workshop is structured in a way to where you can take the beginning shooting, advanced shooting, and video editing as individual courses or as a comprehensive whole. In addition to the use of DSLR video, Tim will discuss the use of high end video cameras like the Red and Phantom systems and when use of such systems are appropriate.

The festival is still in the process of looking for DSLR film submissions. This first year is non-juried and without awards. Consequently we are not asking for fees for submissions. Please contact us directly in regards to having your film shown at this year's festival. Please note that ALL FILMS NEED TO HAVE BEEN SHOT USING A DSLR CAMERA. Have them email Eric Moore, Executive Director, eric@telluridephotofestival.com.

Additionally, we are rounding out our list of portfolio reviewers for this year's festival. If you know someone that is involved in the photographic industry professionally (photographer, photo editor, photo buyer, etc.), and wants to attend this year's festival please have them contact Crystal Geise, Festival Director, crystal@telluridephotofestival.com. For two shifts of five 30 minute reviews, the reviewer will receive lodging and a standard pass to the festival. Plus it's a great time.

We are now accepting applications for volunteers. Since we are having all of the seminars and portfolio reviews at the Telluride Conference Center this year, we need more volunteers to help hang and take down exhibits before and after the festival. This will give you the opportunity to sit in on more of the festival events. We won't need as many volunteers as last year and priority will be given to those that volunteered their time previously.

Finally, there has been some feedback lately that people are undecided about coming to the festival because the entire lineup of seminars, symposiums, and other events have yet to be posted. Unfortunately we don't often get confirmations from companies and individuals sometimes only a few weeks out from the festival dates. It is not easy to organize such a large event with as many diverse pieces as this festival has. One of the ideas behind early pricing is that you the attendee have faith that the festival is going to be as good or exceed the previous festival. Additionally, you can receive your money back on a pass (minus a $20 cancelation fee) up until September 1, 2011. With this all said, we are going to be posting some of the information we know in regards to seminars, symposiums, and portfolio reviewers in the next few weeks.

Early Bird Workshop Pricing and Discounted Passes

We have added Lucas Gilman's workshop to our line up. It runs after the festival--October 3-5. Workshop pricing is discounted by 20% until July 1st! That's a significant savings off of what are some of the lowest workshop prices of any festival. Plus opposed to other festivals, participants are limited to 12-15 insuring you will receive one-on-one instruction you can't get with 30+ people in a workshop. Last year our workshops averaged eight people per workshop. Additionally, you can still save over 20% on a pass until July 1st.

A unique workshop will be added here shortly that will be an iLCP associated and lead by an iLCP Fellow. It is a workshop that focuses on conservation photography and how you can work with your local organizations to provide images for local causes. The workshop will take you through the steps of working with the local organization director, find out the goals of the organization, how to arrange and organize the photo shoot, how to utilize the imagery, and create media attention. There is no other workshop out there like this.

The festival has also added Boyd Norton as a presenter to our program. Boyd is a long time conservation photographer (He had worked with Ed Abbey on--believe it or not--an article about Telluride). Boyd's recent project has been the protection and conservation of the Serengeti which faces multiple threats. He has recently published a book "Serengeti - The Eternal Beginning". His amazing photography will take you on a journey of what will be lost if action is not taken now. Boyd also hopes to inspire future photographers to take up conservation issues.
